11 Million Children Vaccinated Against Measles in Weeklong Nationwide Campaign, Says Health Ministry
Addis Ababa, May 22, 2025 (FMC) — Eleven million children have been vaccinated against measles in just one week as part of a nationwide immunization campaign, according to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health.
The campaign, which is being carried out across all regions of the country, is part of a broader effort to curb the resurgence of epidemic-prone diseases such as measles.
Dr. Mariamawit Asfaw, Head of the Maternal, Children, and Juvenile Health Department at the Ministry, told Fana Media Corporation that the campaign is already showing promising results.
She explained that the initiative not only aims to protect children from measles, but also to identify those who are vulnerable due to malnutrition, vitamin A deficiency, and lack of routine immunizations. It also addresses the needs of mothers who suffered injuries during childbirth.
According to Dr. Mariamawit, the campaign is ongoing and will soon be launched in Addis Ababa and the Somali Regional State, further expanding its reach.
The Ministry aims to vaccinate a total of 17.5 million children aged 9 months to 5 years over the course of the ten-day campaign.
