6th All-Ethiopia Games kick off in Jimma under concept of patriotism and unity

Addis Ababa, June 17, 2025 (FMC) – The 6th All-Ethiopia Games officially commenced today with an opening ceremony at Jimma University Stadium, drawing thousands of athletes from all regions and city administrations in a nationwide celebration of sports and national pride.

The Oromia Region, which received the symbolic torch from the Sidama Region, is hosting this year’s games in Jimma City. The ten-day competition, running from June 17 to 26, will feature more than 4,500 athletes competing in 26 different sports disciplines. The event serves as a critical platform for discovering and nurturing emerging athletic talent while fostering unity among Ethiopia’s diverse communities.

Held under the theme “Sports for Ethiopian Patriotism,” the games aim not only to showcase athletic excellence but also to strengthen national cohesion and the spirit of togetherness.

Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh, who served as the guest of honor at the opening event, highlighted the important role of the National Sports Games in cultivating youth awareness about Ethiopia’s rich history and cultural heritage. He emphasized that the games, held in Jimma—the birthplace of Abba Jifar and a historic center of Ethiopian nationalism—offer young athletes a valuable opportunity to develop life skills such as inclusiveness, fairness, teamwork, and responsibility.

Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen further noted that sports are instrumental in shaping the next generation of Ethiopians, describing the sector as a fertile ground for producing vibrant, capable citizens. Reflecting the government’s commitment, he pointed out ongoing efforts to build sports facilities at various scales across the country, facilitating widespread access and participation.

He also acknowledged the significance of reviving the All-Ethiopia Games after a nine-year hiatus, calling it a powerful demonstration of resilience and unity. His remarks included appreciation for the regional and city administrations, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the event’s organizers, and the Oromia Regional State and Jimma City for their crucial roles in successfully hosting the games.

The opening ceremony featured cultural performances and festivities that set an energetic and hopeful tone for what promises to be an inspiring sporting festival over the coming ten days.
