6th Annual Grand Street Iftar Underway in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa, March 7, 2026 (FMC) – The sixth annual nationwide Grand Street Iftar is underway in Ethiopia’s capital, bringing together thousands of participants in a communal expression of faith and solidarity at Meskel Square.
Organized by the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council in partnership with the Ethiopian Muslim Youth Council, the event is held under the theme “Nejashi for the Country.” The theme honors Ethiopia’s historic legacy of tolerance and the tradition associated with Ashama ibn Abjar, the Axumite ruler celebrated in Islamic history for granting refuge to early Muslims.
Participants gathered to share a collective iftar and reflect on the spiritual values of Ramadan, while organizers highlighted initiatives aimed at strengthening social cohesion and community development. The program, held simultaneously in various regions, underscores Ethiopia’s enduring tradition of interfaith coexistence and civic solidarity.
The Grand Street Iftar has become an annual fixture that attracts diverse communities, reinforcing messages of unity and shared values. Organizers say this year’s event also emphasizes Ethiopia’s contribution to cultural and religious harmony on the global stage.
