“The Medemer State” advocates inclusive governance and innovation for Ethiopia’s dev’t, Minister says

Addis Ababa, September 17, 2025 (FMC) – Minister of Planning and Development Fitsum Assefa underscored that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s latest book, The Medemer State, lays out a comprehensive framework for inclusive governance, innovative solutions, and sustainable national development.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Fitsum emphasized that the Medemer philosophy seeks to harness Ethiopia’s collective strengths toward common national goals, fostering synergy among government institutions, the private sector, civil society, and local communities.

“The book emphasizes that Ethiopia must first confront and resolve its internal challenges before engaging meaningfully with global progress,” she said. “It presents a political and economic vision that redefines governance through creativity, collaboration, and inclusiveness.”

Minister Fitsum highlighted that the book advocates an indigenous governance model tailored to Ethiopia’s unique realities, warning against the uncritical adoption of foreign doctrines that have historically triggered conflict and division.

Instead, the Medemer State framework advances solutions and development strategies firmly grounded in the country’s context.

She further noted that the work envisions coordinated roles for both public and private actors, enabling the unlocking of Ethiopia’s creative potential, the creation of new markets, and the generation of lasting opportunities for prosperity.

Addressing systemic challenges, cultural fragmentation, and institutional weaknesses as key obstacles, Minister Fitsum emphasized that The Medemer State promotes building a solid foundation for growth, stability, and sustainable development through inclusive governance and collaborative approaches.

“The book’s vision extends beyond meeting immediate needs,” she added, “seeking to propel Ethiopia toward innovation-driven development and strategic ‘leapfrogging’ for long-term national prosperity.”
