Southwest Ethiopia and Somali Regions Join Nationwide Celebrations of GERD Milestone
Addis Ababa, September 19, 2025 (FMC) – The inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) continues to spark nationwide jubilation, with large-scale celebrations held this morning across the Southwest Ethiopia People’s and Somali regional states.
Gathered under the theme “We Did It in Unity,” citizens from diverse backgrounds voiced their solidarity with the government’s efforts to secure Ethiopia’s prosperity through the successful completion of the dam.
Crowds chanted slogans proclaiming the GERD as “the symbol of our prosperity,” “a mark of our potential,” and “a foundation of our unity.” Demonstrators also described the project as “a victory repeated,” “tangible good news for all Ethiopians,” and a proud testament to self-reliance and African identity.
Participants further emphasized that the GERD represents both the spirit of Ethiopian nationalism and a catalyst for collective recovery and development. The celebrations also honored the sacrifices and milestones that made the dam a reality, reinforcing messages of resilience and unity.
Regional leaders, including chief administrators of both states, addressed the buoyant gatherings, commending the people’s unwavering support and reaffirming their commitment to safeguard the dam as a national treasure.
The GERD was officially inaugurated on September 9 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in the presence of several African heads of state and dignitaries. Since then, celebratory events have swept across Ethiopia, reflecting citizens’ pride in what is widely hailed as the nation’s flagship mega project.
Recognized as the largest hydroelectric dam on the continent, the GERD stands not only as a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s development but also as an emblem of Africa’s broader aspirations for self-sustained growth and prosperity.
