Earthquake Causes Casualties and Destruction in Afar’s Barahle Woreda
Addis Ababa, October 12, 2025 (FMC) — An earthquake that struck Barahle Woreda in the northern zone of Ethiopia’s Afar Region last night has caused loss of life and significant damage to property, local officials confirmed.
According to Northern Zone Chief Administrator Mohamed Ali Ashab, the tremor affected Barahle, Konaba, and Dallol woredas, with ongoing assessments to determine the full extent of the damage. He said efforts are underway to deliver immediate assistance to affected communities in coordination with the regional government.
Barahle Woreda Chief Administrator Ali Hussein told Fana Media Corporation that several houses in Bure and Asgubi kebeles were completely destroyed. He confirmed that one 12-year-old boy lost his life, while six others were injured.
He added that 43,456 residents have been rendered homeless after their homes were destroyed in the disaster. The local administration, he said, is working closely with regional authorities and partners to provide emergency support and shelter for the victims.
