Slovenia’s embassy in Addis signals strategic commitment to stronger ties with Ethiopia and Africa: Envoy

Addis Ababa, July 8, 2025 (FMC) — Slovenia’s decision to establish an embassy in Addis Ababa reflects a deliberate and strategic commitment to deepening political, economic, and developmental engagement with Ethiopia and the broader African continent, according to Slovenian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Kristina Radej.

Inaugurated on November 1 last year, the embassy marks Slovenia’s third diplomatic mission in Africa with a resident ambassador, reinforcing its intention to enhance cooperation and visibility on the continent.

Ambassador Radej emphasized that the opening of the Addis Ababa embassy represents not only a strengthening of bilateral relations with Ethiopia, but also a broader pledge to Africa’s collective advancement. “This is a symbol of our long-term vision to build enduring partnerships rooted in mutual respect and shared opportunity,” she said in an interview with ENA.

Economically, Slovenia is identifying key sectors in Ethiopia with high potential for collaboration, including agriculture, renewable energy, and technology. Slovenian companies have already begun exploratory visits to assess opportunities and build connections with Ethiopian partners.

Beyond commerce, the ambassador highlighted Slovenia’s commitment to knowledge sharing, especially in areas such as technology transfer and agricultural innovation. A notable initiative currently supported by the Slovenian embassy is an urban beekeeping pilot program underway in Addis Ababa and other regions—an initiative expected to directly benefit local farmers and agribusinesses.

Ambassador Radej also underscored Slovenia’s broader diplomatic approach, noting that its engagement in Ethiopia complements its obligations as a member of the European Union and the United Nations. The new embassy, she added, will serve as a key diplomatic hub for promoting multilateral cooperation, regional peacebuilding, and sustainable development initiatives.

Reflecting on the evolving ties between the two countries, the ambassador stated that the opening of the embassy solidifies a growing friendship—one that benefits from Slovenia’s own historical experience in regional integration and post-conflict recovery in Europe.

She concluded by affirming Slovenia’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s peace and unity, guided by African priorities and institutions: “Our partnerships will be anchored in listening, learning, and supporting Africa’s aspirations with humility and respect.”
