PM Abiy Ahmed meets with President Hassan S. Mohamud of Somalia

Addis Ababa, July 27, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud today in Addis Ababa on the sidelines of the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS+4), which officially opened this morning.

“Welcome to Ethiopia, my brother Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, ahead of the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit, which we are proud to host,” the Prime Minister wrote on social media. “Ethiopia and Somalia share deep-rooted historical, cultural, and diplomatic ties, and we remain committed to strengthening our brotherly relations.”

The meeting was part of a series of high-level bilateral engagements held by the Prime Minister this morning, as Ethiopia welcomed global leaders and heads of delegations for the summit’s opening “Action Day” session. The Prime Minister had meetings with the FAO Director General Qu Dongyu, the UN Deputy Secretary General Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, and the President of IFAD Álvaro Lario.

UNFSS+4, which runs from July 27–29, aims to accelerate global and national progress toward inclusive, resilient, and sustainable food systems. Ethiopia’s hosting of the summit underscores its commitment to food sovereignty, nutrition, and climate-resilient agriculture.
