MFA Ethiopia expresses sorrow over lives lost in Yemen boat accident
Addis Ababa, August 4, 2025 (FMC) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia today expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of Ethiopian citizens in a recent boat accident off the coast of Yemen.
In a statement issued Monday, the Ministry conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident. It confirmed that the government is working closely with relevant authorities to gather more information and ensure appropriate follow-up.
The Ministry reaffirmed that the Ethiopian government continues to expand safe and legal channels for overseas employment, which have already enabled thousands of citizens to work abroad through lawful and structured means. It urged citizens to avoid irregular migration routes and to protect themselves from human traffickers who exploit vulnerable individuals and expose them to life-threatening risks.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that at least 68 people—mostly Ethiopians—died and over 70 remain missing after a boat carrying migrants capsized off Yemen’s southern coast on Sunday. The vessel was reportedly carrying around 150 people.
The Ministry underscored that such incidents further highlight the urgent need to strengthen public awareness and international cooperation to ensure the safety and dignity of Ethiopian citizens seeking opportunities abroad.
