Revitalized Riversides to Boost Ecosystem Health and Urban Resilience, Says PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, August 8, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated on Friday that healthy, well-maintained riversides are essential for protecting ecosystems, enhancing water quality, and creating vibrant public spaces that improve urban resilience and community well-being.

In a message shared on his official social media platforms, the Prime Minister highlighted the progress of the Addis Ababa Riverside Project, which was reviewed in detail following the Prosperity Party Central Council meetings held earlier in the day.

According to the update, the current phase of the project spans 21.5 kilometers across five sub-cities of the capital and includes walkways, bike lanes, public plazas, parking spaces, children’s playgrounds, shops, and amphitheaters.

Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that the multi-purpose initiative aims to curb river pollution, reduce the city’s vulnerability to flooding, expand green infrastructure, and create jobs. “Once complete,” he noted, “it will not only protect our environment but also give Addis Ababa a vibrant, resilient riverside that energizes the city’s economy and quality of life.”

The Addis Ababa Riverside Project is one of the government’s flagship urban transformation programs, designed to integrate environmental restoration with modern public amenities.
