PM Abiy: Medemer State Proves Itself as a Distinct and Effective Governing Model

Addis Ababa, August 21, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) underscored that the Medemer State is distinct from other forms of government in both its outcomes and processes, describing it as a governing model that delivers tangible results for the Ethiopian people.

In an exclusive interview with Fana Media Corporation (FMC) about his new book The Medemer State, the Prime Minister explained that the central aim of this model is to advance Ethiopia toward the aspirations of its citizens rather than serving the narrow interests of individuals or groups.

He stated that capacity and responsibility must be consolidated in order to achieve universal prosperity, adding that the Medemer State ensures all Ethiopian citizens participate in national affairs while regions once regarded as partners have become full owners of the country.

Abiy highlighted that efforts are being made to establish a balanced relationship between government and citizens to build a healthy system. He cautioned that excessive freedom can result in chaos, while concentrating all power in government risks dictatorship. The Medemer State, he said, avoids both extremes by deriving legitimacy through democratic elections.

The Prime Minister noted that the Medemer State is guided by the pursuit of an “imaginary height,” encouraging the nation to look beyond achievements already attained and to strive for greater progress. He stressed that a defining feature of this governing thought is its ability to translate visions and planned dreams into reality.

Leadership is another hallmark of the Medemer State, Abiy added, citing the way the government has turned challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic into opportunities for progress.
