Addis Ababa, September 10, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has extended his heartfelt greetings to Ethiopians on the occasion of the 2018 Ethiopian New Year, highlighting the dawn of national revival and the historic inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

In his message, the Prime Minister emphasized that the New Year is not merely a time for celebration but also an opportunity to deepen Ethiopia’s commitment to unity, progress, and national development.

“Happy 2018 Ethiopian New Year, which marks the dawn of Ethiopia’s revival and the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam,” he said. “The past year has shown that with perseverance and divine guidance, success is within our reach. Our achievements in agriculture, tourism, mining, manufacturing, and ICT reflect this reality.”

Describing the GERD as a testament to Ethiopia’s potential, he said: “The Dam proves that with a nation as vast as Ethiopia and a people as resilient as Ethiopians, there are no limits to what we can achieve. Ethiopia faced immense trials during the final stages of this monumental project, yet through the dedication of our workers, the sacrifices of our security personnel, and the Creator’s guidance, we reached this historic milestone.”

The Prime Minister highlighted the broader significance of the occasion: “We are not merely celebrating the change of a year; we are witnessing the change of history. Ethiopia’s landscape, its role in the region, and the dreams of our forefathers are becoming a reality. This is not the beginning of our journey, but a defining moment in our long path toward national greatness.”

He urged all Ethiopians to contribute their skills, energy, and creativity to the nation’s progress: “What will truly transform Ethiopia is the speed, creativity, and dedication of its children. Let us, in every office, farm, school, institution, and organization, devote our hearts, knowledge, and energy to Ethiopia’s prosperity. The GERD shows us what is possible when we work together and trust in divine guidance.”

Expressing gratitude to those who contributed to the project, Prime Minister Abiy stated: “We raise our hands in appreciation to everyone who sacrificed so that we could witness this achievement. Those who initiated, supported, and completed this project have written their names in Ethiopia’s history as dedicated children of the nation. Growth and prosperity are the fruits of cooperation, and this spirit must continue.”

He concluded with a message of hope and determination for the year ahead: “2018 will be a year of laying stronger foundations for Ethiopia’s work. With unity, perseverance, and creativity, we will continue to overcome challenges and elevate our nation to even greater heights.”
