UN chief Antonio Guterres congratulates Ethiopia on inauguration of GERD, successful Africa Climate Summit

Addis Ababa, September 25, 2025 (FMC) — The FDRE President Taye Atske-Selassie met with UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th annual.session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) in New York, the U.S..

On the occasion, the Secretary-General congratulated Ethiopia on the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), its recent success in hosting a climate summit and other projects.

The two sides also discussed issues of mutual interest in the region and beyond, it has been learned.

It is noteworthy that President Taye Atske-Selassie, alongside his delegation, has traveled to New York this week to participate in the ongoing UNGA 2025 and related events. He is expected to deliver his speech at the UNGA General Debate later today.
