Meskel Celebrated Colorfully Across Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, September 27, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopian Christians are joyfully celebrating the Meskel holiday today with vibrant religious and cultural ceremonies across the country.

The celebration, which commemorates the Finding of the True Cross, is being marked with prayers, hymns, and traditional gatherings in churches and public squares, reflecting both deep faith and rich cultural heritage.

This follows yesterday’s nationwide Demera festivities, where large bonfires were lit in Addis Ababa and other parts of the country, drawing clergy, faithful, tourists, diplomats and other dignitaries in colorful and prayerful observance.

In his fatherly message delivered on the occasion, His Holiness Abune Mathias I, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, emphasized that Meskel should be celebrated in a spirit of forgiveness, love, compassion, and reconciliation.
