PACTED 2025 Opens in Addis Ababa with Focus on Teacher Training and Dev’t

Addis Ababa, October 1, 2025 (FMC) — The African Union has opened the Pan-African Conference on Teacher Education (PACTED 2025) in Addis Ababa, bringing together educators, policymakers, researchers, and development partners from across the continent.

The three-day gathering, running from October 1 to 3, is held under the theme “Advancing Strategies for Teacher Training, Recognition, and Professional Development.”

The conference coincides with the African Union Continental Teachers Awards 2025, the launch of a continental Teacher Community of Practice platform, and the commemoration of World Teachers’ Day.

PACTED 2025 also marks the start of the AU’s Decade of Accelerated Action for the Transformation of Education and Skills Development (2025–2034), aligned with the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 26–35), the Continental TVET Strategy (CTVET-34), and the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-34).

Delegates will focus on strengthening teacher education systems, advancing professional development, retaining talent, ensuring gender equity, and integrating digital and green skills into teaching across Africa.

Organized by the AU’s Department of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation with support from the European Union’s Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa, the conference is expected to produce harmonized teacher standards, foster collaboration among Member States, and renew commitments to investing in teachers as key drivers of Africa’s development.
