Government offers condolences following deadly wooden bridge collapse in Amhara region
Addis Ababa, October 1, 2025 (FMC) — The Federal Government Communication Service has expressed its condolences over the tragic wooden bridge collapse at Arerti St. Marry’s Church in Minjar Shenkora Woreda, North Shewa Zone of the Amhara Region, which resulted in the loss of many lives and left more than 200 others injured.
In its condolence message, the Communication Service conveyed deep sorrow over the incident, extended sympathies to the families of the victims, and wished a speedy recovery to those receiving medical treatment.
According to the Minjar Shenkora Woreda Police Chief, Inspector Ahmed Gebeyehu, at least 36 people were confirmed dead after the bridge gave way while worshippers were visiting the church under construction.
He added that the death toll could rise as some of the injured remain in critical condition.
The government underscored that, as Ethiopia undergoes a period of comprehensive renewal, it is essential to prioritize safety in all construction activities — ranging from large national projects such as dams to small individual structures.
The statement further emphasized the need for regular inspections of construction sites to ensure strict adherence to workplace safety standards and prevent such tragedies in the future.
