PM Abiy Ahmed: “Dine for Nation” Project Driving Major Urban Transformation in Somali Region

Addis Ababa, October 2, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed affirmed that the “Dine for Nation Initiative” is sparking significant urban transformation across Ethiopia’s cities, following his inspection of ongoing development projects in Jigjiga, the Somali regional capital.

Highlighting the progress in the tourism sector, the Prime Minister cited the construction of nearly 30 hotels currently underway in Jigjiga as a prime example of visible nationwide success. He noted that the “Dine for Nation” projects in the region are between 80 and 85 percent complete and are expected to be finalized and inaugurated within the next three to four months.

PM Abiy emphasized that once completed, these projects will benefit not only the Somali region but also neighboring areas, bringing new value to cities and introducing the public to a modern style of living.

“The work being carried out in the Somali Region is bringing about great change in every locality,” the Prime Minister said, noting the commencement of the Mesob-One Stop Service Center, corridor development, road projects, hospital construction, and other “Dine for Nation” initiatives as signs of significant regional revitalization.

He specifically commended the high-quality, standardized houses constructed in Jigjiga, urging other regions to learn from the Somali State’s achievements in housing development. PM Abiy extended his gratitude to the people and leadership of the Somali Region, as well as to all participants in the ongoing work.

At the same time, he cautioned against complacency, urging citizens not to be fully satisfied with current results. “Why did we not do this in previous years?” he asked, stressing the need for self-reflection and recognition of past inaction.

The Prime Minister also recalled Ethiopia’s recent international award for wheat development and highlighted a recent United Nations award recognizing the country’s Green Legacy Initiative. Regarding corridor development, he noted that the project has set an example for many African countries, with several expressing interest in learning from Ethiopia’s experience.

Acknowledging that Ethiopia’s cities have not yet reached the desired standard, PM Abiy called for intensified collaborative efforts to sustain and strengthen the promising work being done to transform the lifestyle of citizens.
