AU Commission Congratulates Ethiopia on Winning Bid to Host COP32

Addis Ababa, November 15, 2025 (FMC) — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated Ethiopia on securing the bid to host the 32nd Conference of the Parties (COP32) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2027.

In a statement issued today, the AU Commission chairperson said the endorsement and selection of Ethiopia reflects both Africa’s united commitment to climate action and Ethiopia’s leadership in advancing sustainable development and green growth at continental and global levels.

He stated that Ethiopia’s climate-oriented initiatives, including large-scale reforestation and the Green Legacy Programme, have positioned the country as a driving force in Africa’s climate diplomacy and climate-resilient development efforts.

The AU Commission noted that Ethiopia has demonstrated the capacity and experience required to host major international meetings, referencing multiple global and continental summits successfully held in Addis Ababa, supported by strong institutional, logistical, and operational capabilities.

As host to the African Union Headquarters and numerous international organisations, Addis Ababa is widely regarded as one of the world’s major diplomatic hubs. The Commission said the decision to host COP32 in Ethiopia reaffirms the city’s leading role in international dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and climate-focused negotiation platforms.

The AU Commission said it will work in close collaboration with the Government of Ethiopia, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and development and climate partners to ensure the delivery of a successful, inclusive, and results-driven COP32 that advances Africa’s priorities and strengthens global collective action against climate change.
