Ethiopia, UN Peacebuilding Commission reiterate continued cooperation on peace and security matters

Addis Ababa, November 18, 2025 (FMC) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos met with members of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (UNPBC) at his office earlier today.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the work of the UNPBC and its engagement with the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC), it has been learned.

On the occasion, Minister Gedion commended members of the Commission for navigating a challenging geopolitical landscape in the implementation of the Commission’s mandate in support of countries emerging from conflict.

He underscored that strong institutions, effective governance, national commitment and international cooperation for sustainable development are critical for lasting peace and security. He also underscored the importance of youth and its contribution to peace.

FM Gedion emphasized Ethiopia’s longstanding partnership with the United Nations, reiterating his country’s continued commitment to explore all avenues of cooperation in support of peace.

He appreciated the leadership of Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN Chair, Mr. Ricklef Beutin, Chair of the UNPC and the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the UN Mr. Ekitela Lokaale for their work in the UNPBC.

In response, Members of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (UNPBC) expressed their readiness to continue working closely with Ethiopia, the African Union and regional organizations in areas, including conflict prevention, post-conflict recovery, youth and women’s participation and peace financing.

It is to be recalled that Ethiopia served as a member of the UNPBC for eight years, from 2016-2024, according to the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry.
