Addis Ababa Unveils Innovative Technology to Modernize Public Service Delivery
Addis Ababa, December 6, 2025 (FMC) – Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced that the newly inaugurated Integrated Civil Registration and Residency Service Technology marks a definitive step toward fully digitized public service delivery in the capital.
Presiding over the official launch of the state-of-the-art system on Friday, the Mayor commended the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute for developing the platform.
During the event, Mayor Adanech emphasized that the digital technology sector remains a central pillar of the ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing service delivery across the city. She noted that deploying efficient, tech-assisted systems in various sectors has been instrumental in shielding residents from unnecessary financial burdens and saving time.
According to the Mayor, this new operational ecosystem will streamline the provision of integrated, modern services while establishing a system defined by transparency and accountability. Uniquely, the platform integrates vital events registration with residency identification. Mayor Adanech explained that residents can easily access these services via smartphones by downloading the application from the Google Play Store or the App Store.
Beyond improving service delivery, she highlighted that the technology also provides critical data to inform policy formulation. By properly documenting generated information, the city can prepare more accurate strategic development plans. Citing the system’s potential to elevate Addis Ababa’s global competitiveness, the Mayor announced that full implementation will begin in 50 Woredas starting December 8, 2025.
Director General of the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, Worku Gachena, remarked that artificial intelligence serves as a key engine for development. He noted that extensive efforts have been undertaken to ensure Ethiopia fully benefits from AI technology, yielding encouraging outcomes across both economic and social sectors.
Yosef Nigussie, Director General of the Civil Registration and Residency Service Agency, added that the new technology is expected to significantly enhance the institution’s service quality, while also addressing malpractices and reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks.
