PM Abiy: Bishoftu International Airport Marks a Milestone in Ethiopia’s Modernization Journey

Addis Ababa, January 10, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia is advancing one of Africa’s most ambitious aviation initiatives with Bishoftu International Airport, a project Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said is being driven by the resilience and vision of Ethiopian Airlines. Described as the largest aviation infrastructure project in Africa, the development underscores the airline’s pivotal role as a source of national pride and a trailblazer for the continent.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, alongside First Lady Zinash Tayachew and senior government officials, officially launched the construction of the airport during a groundbreaking ceremony at the site.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Prime Minister said the 10 billion USD mega project marks a milestone in Ethiopia’s journey toward modernization and prosperity. He highlighted Ethiopian Airlines as a source of national pride, noting that its significance lies not in being free of challenges, but in its resilience, its ability to overcome obstacles, and its role as a trailblazer for Africa.

He emphasized that the airline’s greatest strength lies in its corporate culture, built on giving priority to safety and security, leadership driven by creativity and hard work, a workforce of over 26,000 employees who believe in the airline as their flag carrier and honor what it represents, and a continuous commitment to learning and capacity building.

Bishoftu International Airport is located about 40 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa at an altitude of 1,910 meters, offering optimal conditions for aircraft performance and the efficient handling of both origin-destination and transit passengers.

The project includes the construction of a multi-lane modern highway linking the airport with Addis Ababa, as well as a 38-kilometer high-speed railway, with operating speeds of 120–200 kilometers per hour.

In its first phase, Bishoftu International Airport will accommodate 60 million passengers annually, while the full master plan envisions a capacity of up to 110 million passengers per year, positioning Ethiopia among the world’s leading aviation hubs.

The Bishoftu International Airport project reflects Ethiopia’s ambition to strengthen its continental and global aviation presence, showcasing how the resilience, vision, and corporate excellence of Ethiopian Airlines are driving the country toward a new era of modernization, connectivity, and economic growth.
