Religious and Cultural Values Anchor National Unity, Says Minister Shewit Shanka

Addis Ababa, January 19, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s rich religious, historical, and cultural values serve as the foundation of its multinational unity and are central to the nation’s identity, Minister of Culture and Sport Shewit Shanka said during the vibrant Timket celebrations at Jan Meda in Addis Ababa.

Delivering her remarks amid the spirited festival atmosphere, Minister Shanka highlighted the profound role these shared traditions play in reinforcing social cohesion across Ethiopia’s diverse communities.

The grand occasion was honored by the presence of Abune Dioskoros, Secretary General of the Holy Synod, along with archbishops of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Their participation underscored the deeply rooted spiritual significance of the festival.

Joining the festivities were Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abebie, members of the diplomatic corps, Sunday school students, and a large gathering of the faithful — including international visitors — all contributing to a vibrant celebration of unity and heritage.

Minister Shanka emphasized that Ethiopia continues to exemplify multinational harmony, richly adorned with a mosaic of diverse identities and belief systems. She referred to these collective traditions as “Ethiopia’s multinational jewels,” powerful forces that inspire the nation to stand together with unwavering resolve whenever its sovereignty is challenged.

Speaking on the global resonance of the celebration, the minister noted that Timket has transcended national borders to become a cherished cultural experience that captivates visitors from around the world.

The minister expressed profound appreciation for the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church’s enduring role in safeguarding the authentic religious and cultural essence of Timket through the centuries.

Minister Shanka concluded her remarks with a call to the public, urging that such celebrations inspire renewed dedication to collective efforts aimed at securing peace and prosperity for the nation.

She underscored that Timket is far more than a religious observance — it stands as a living testament to Ethiopian civilization and a powerful expression of the nation’s shared heritage.

Tracing its origins to antiquity, the tradition of the Tabot — the sacred representation of the Ark of the Covenant — leaving the sanctuary to be among the people symbolizes the profound closeness between the divine and the community, reinforcing enduring spiritual bonds across generations.
