PM Abiy: Ethiopia’s AI University and 5 Million Coders Initiative to Drive Youth-Led Economic Transformation

Addis Ababa, February 3, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) told lawmakers today that Ethiopia is placing technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and youth empowerment at the center of its economic reform agenda, preparing the next generation to lead the country into a competitive global economy.

Speaking during the 10th regular session of the Ethiopian Parliament, PM Abiy highlighted the government’s efforts to equip young Ethiopians with advanced skills, noting that Ethiopia is establishing Africa’s second AI university, set to become fully operational within the next Ethiopian year. The university is expected to become a regional hub for innovation, research, and AI-driven education.

The Prime Minister emphasized that AI and technology are key pillars of Ethiopia’s five-pronged development strategy, ensuring that youth are prepared for future opportunities and challenges. Complementing the university, the government’s “5 Million Ethiopia Coders Initiative” aims to train young people in coding and digital innovation. So far, three million youth have been trained, positioning them to develop applications, harness technology, and drive national transformation.

PM Abiy also pointed to investments in early childhood education, with over 34,000 kindergartens built in the last six years, benefiting more than 4 million children. These initiatives aim to cultivate knowledge and skills from an early age, fostering a generation capable of creating wealth and innovation within Ethiopia.

The Prime Minister further noted Ethiopia’s digital transformation, highlighting that the number of mobile phone users has increased from 37 million to 97 million, mobile money accounts have reached 58 million, and 4G networks now cover 1,070 towns and cities, with 5G already operational in several urban centers.

Ethiopian Airlines has also expanded, transporting 10.7 million passengers in the past six months, reflecting broader modernization efforts in transport and communication infrastructure.

Drawing a parallel with past national achievements, PM Abiy said, “Just as our forefathers built Ethiopian Airlines and turned it into a global symbol of national pride, this AI university and our digital initiatives will open new horizons for Ethiopia’s children and future generations.”

“These strategic investments in AI, coding, education, and digital infrastructure are laying the foundation for a knowledge-driven economy, positioning Ethiopia as a leader in Africa and globally,” he added.
