Ethiopia rolls out National Education Trust Fund Strategy to boost quality and accountability in education
Addis Ababa, February 8, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education has officially launched the National Education Trust Fund Strategy, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening sustainable financing, accountability, and quality across the education sector.
The strategy was unveiled during a consultative forum convened to review the education sector’s performance over the first six months of the current fiscal year, with the participation of senior officials and representatives from regional education offices.
Speaking at the forum, State Minister of Education Ms. Ayelech Eshete said the strategy is designed to consolidate and sustain the nationwide “Education for the Generation” movement, which is being implemented in a structured and coordinated manner across the country.
She noted that the Education for the Generation Movement, spearheaded under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), has opened broad opportunities for transformative interventions throughout the sector. According to the State Minister, the National Education Trust Fund Strategy is expected to significantly enhance these efforts and improve measurable outcomes once fully operational.
Ms. Ayelech emphasized that the strategy will play a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient, transparent, and accountable use of financial resources, thereby reinforcing the sector’s focus on improving education quality nationwide.
She further underscored that sustained attention is being given to upgrading school standards to ensure equitable access to quality education for all citizens. In this regard, she highlighted that the Education for the Generation Movement has already registered tangible progress, particularly in expanding and improving school infrastructure across the country.
