Addis Ababa police announce road closures for 1447th Eid al-Fitr

Addis Ababa, March 19, 2026 (FMC) – The Addis Ababa Police have announced temporary road closures across the city to facilitate the 1447th Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

The restrictions will be in effect from the start of Eid prayers until the conclusion of the festivities, the statement from the capital’s polic noted.

Authorities have urged motorists to plan ahead and use alternative routes to avoid congestion. Parking on the designated roads will be strictly prohibited starting from the evening before the holiday.

Key closures include major thoroughfares and intersections:

  • Megenagna via Haya Hulet Roundabout to Meskel Square: Blocked at both sides of St. Urael Church Square; vehicles from Bole to St. Urael Square blocked at Atlas Hotel and Peacock Park traffic lights.
  • Bole Wollo Sefer to Olympia Roundabout: Closed at Olympia Roundabout.
  • Inside road from Bole Wollo Sefer to Gazebo Roundabout: Blocked at Gazebo Roundabout.
  • Agona Cinema Intersection to Tilahun Square via St. Joseph Traffic Light: Heavy vehicles blocked at Agona Cinema Intersection; other vehicles blocked at Tilahun Square.
  • Bulgaria Area Traffic Light via Genet Hotel to Mexico Square: Blocked at Bulgaria Area Traffic Light.
  • Inside road from Lideta Tsebel to Ashu Restaurant: Blocked at Lideta Tsebel.
  • Tor Hayloch via Federal High Court to Mexico Square Highway: Closed at Federal High Court intersection.
  • Abnet Area via Feresegna Police Camp Traffic Light to Chefe Meda Traffic Light: Closed at Feresegna Police Camp Traffic Light.
  • Mola Maru Intersection to Geja Sefer Area: Blocked at Mola Maru turn.
  • Berbere Berenda to Former Amstegna Police Station: Closed at Kana Zegelila Bakery intersection.
  • Merkato Area via St. Tekle-Haymanot Church Roundabout to Black Lion Hospital: Blocked at St. Tekle-Haymanot Church Roundabout.
  • Tewodros Square via Churchill Road to National Administration Light: Blocked at Tewodros Square.
  • 4 Kilo Square to Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Closed at 4 Kilo Square.
  • Signal Area via Women’s Square to Kazanchis: Closed at Women’s Square.

The Addis Ababa Police emphasized public safety during the celebrations and encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities via toll-free hotlines 990, 991, 987, 816, 011-1-26-43-59, 011-5-52-63-02/03, 011-5-52-40-77, 011-5-54-36-78, 011-5-54-36-81, or through the Citizen Engagement Application (EFPApp) on mobile devices.

All closures will begin at 5:00 a.m. on the day of Eid and remain in place until the official program concludes.
