Nationwide EV charging stations advance Ethiopia’s energy sovereignty & green economy goals
Addis Ababa, March 28, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s strides in renewable energy reflect a steadfast commitment to forward-looking policies and leadership, the Minister of State for Transport and Logistics, Ber’o Hassen, said during the inauguration of a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Addis Ababa.
The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) unveiled the station as part of the country’s ambitious push to transition its transport sector toward sustainable energy. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ber’o highlighted Ethiopia’s significant potential to strengthen climate resilience through renewable energy.

“Expanding renewable energy not only supports environmental sustainability but also reinforces our energy sovereignty by reducing dependence on imported oil and foreign exchange expenditures,” he said.
The Minister noted that approximately 140,000 electric vehicles are currently operating nationwide, and multiple charging stations are being developed in Addis Ababa and regional cities to meet the growing demand for EV power supply.
“Building a nationwide network of electric vehicle charging stations will further diminish oil reliance while enhancing the country’s energy independence,” Minister Ber’o added.
Engineer Getu Geremew, CEO of the Ethiopian Electric Utility, emphasized that the initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s green economy strategy. He stated that the charging stations are designed to ensure reliable power supply and that the nationwide expansion of EV infrastructure will continue on a large scale.
Ethiopia’s progress in renewable energy and electric mobility illustrates the tangible results of consistent policy direction and strong leadership, underscoring the nation’s commitment to a sustainable and self-reliant energy future.
