GCS: Eight years of strategic diplomacy propel Ethiopia to new global and regional heights

Addis Ababa, March 31, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Government Communication Service (GCS) says the country has registered far-reaching diplomatic gains over the past eight years, driven by a strategic and reform-oriented foreign policy that has elevated its standing at both regional and global levels.

In a statement issued today, the GCS said the government’s active and forward-looking diplomatic engagement has helped dismantle long-standing perceptions that portrayed Ethiopia as encircled by hostile forces, replacing them with a more confident and outward-facing international posture.

The statement underscored that Ethiopia’s foreign policy under the reform-driven government has been firmly anchored in national interest, with sovereignty and development priorities guiding its engagements under all circumstances.

According to the GCS, Ethiopia has effectively navigated sustained external pressures in recent years while strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations, resulting in notable diplomatic achievements. Among these, the country’s accession to the BRICS+ framework was highlighted as a clear reflection of its growing influence and role in global decision-making.

The government credited its “neighbor-first” policy with transforming regional relations from suspicion into durable strategic partnerships. Ethiopia’s push to enhance regional connectivity through investments in renewable energy, transport infrastructure, railways, and clean water supply has played a central role in fostering shared growth and interdependence, the statement said.

It added that this approach has opened a new chapter in positioning Ethiopia not only as an economic pillar in the region but also as an emerging and leading regional power.

The GCS further emphasized the role of citizen-centered diplomacy, noting that efforts to support and repatriate Ethiopians facing difficult conditions abroad demonstrate the government’s firm commitment to its citizens, reinforcing public trust and national pride.

On the global stage, Ethiopia’s expanding diplomatic engagement has strengthened its presence in international forums, with the statement describing the country as a pillar of Pan-Africanism and a symbol of resilience. It added that Ethiopia is increasingly recognized as a source of regional initiatives and a solution-oriented actor in global affairs.

The statement noted that the cumulative diplomatic gains of the past eight years have enhanced Ethiopia’s global influence and reinforced its capacity to navigate an evolving international landscape.

The GCS also called on citizens to continue contributing to the country’s diplomatic efforts by serving as ambassadors in their respective fields, emphasizing the importance of sustaining a mature, strategically guided foreign policy rooted in national interests.
