Africa’s largest airport project in Ethiopia set to redefine continental aviation capacity
Addis Ababa, April 23, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s $12.5 billion airport project near Bishoftu is drawing renewed international attention for its scale and potential impact on continental aviation capacity, as construction on the facility continues.
The project, located about 45 kilometres southeast of Addis Ababa, is being developed as Africa’s largest airport infrastructure undertaking and is expected to significantly expand the country’s aviation handling capacity once completed.
According to a recent article by CNN, the development is designed to accommodate tens of millions of passengers annually, positioning it among the most ambitious aviation infrastructure projects on the continent.
The airport is being led by Ethiopian Airlines Group, which is overseeing financing and implementation in collaboration with international partners. The project is expected to enhance regional and international connectivity by strengthening Ethiopia’s role in African and global aviation networks.
The report indicates that the scale of the project reflects rising air traffic demand and the need to expand capacity beyond existing infrastructure, particularly Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, which has been operating under increasing pressure.
Ethiopian authorities have previously stated that the project forms part of broader efforts to improve transport infrastructure, facilitate trade flows, and support logistics integration across regional and international markets.
The development is among several major infrastructure projects underway in Ethiopia as part of ongoing economic modernization and long-term expansion of strategic transport systems.
