President Taye calls for modern patriotism anchored in dev’t and national transformation
Addis Ababa, May 5, 2026 (FMC) – President Taye Atske Selassie has called on Ethiopians to embrace a renewed form of patriotism anchored in development and modernization, stating that contemporary patriotism must be expressed through active contribution to national progress.
He made the remarks this morning during the 85th Ethiopian Patriots’ Victory Day commemoration held at the Victory Monument Square in Arat Kilo, Addis Ababa.
On the occasion, he also laid a wreath at the Patriots’ Monument in tribute to those who sacrificed their lives defending Ethiopia’s sovereignty and independence.
The national ceremony was attended by senior government officials, veterans’ families, descendants of patriots, and members of the public, who gathered to honor Ethiopia’s historic victory and the sacrifices of Ethiopian patriots.
The President stated that Patriots’ Victory Day is a major historical milestone marking Ethiopia’s victory over fascism and Nazism, extending his congratulations to the Ethiopian people as well as to patriots and their descendants.
He emphasized that the day is observed in recognition of the perseverance, sacrifice, and prolonged struggle of Ethiopian patriots.
Reflecting on the resistance struggle, President Taye noted that Ethiopian patriots, despite limited resources and traditional weapons, were able to resist and defeat invading forces equipped with modern military capabilities.
He said this demonstrated the strength of unity, elevated Ethiopia’s international standing, and contributed to laying the foundation for the decline of fascist ideology.
He further stated that the heritage inherited from past generations is grounded in peace, freedom, and self-confidence, adding that patriotism represents the dignity of a stable and peaceful society.
The President underscored that the historic victory remains a foundation for national prosperity and future aspirations.
He also stressed that every citizen is expected to serve the nation with understanding and foresight, noting that the aspiration of the Ethiopian people is growth, education, and modernization.
Concluding his remarks, President Taye reiterated that today’s patriotism must be reflected through active engagement in development and leadership in modernization, calling on citizens to honor past sacrifices by contributing to the building of a stronger and more prosperous Ethiopia.
