UN Must Evolve to Reflect Today’s Global Realities and Africa’s Rising Role — PM Abiy Ahmed
Addis Ababa, May 13, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called for the renewal and adaptation of the multilateral system to better reflect present-day global realities, stressing the need for stronger representation, equity, and effectiveness within international institutions.
Speaking at the National Palace during the commemoration marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Prime Minister Abiy said the milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on how multilateral institutions must evolve in response to a rapidly changing world.
He noted that the United Nations was established eight decades ago in the aftermath of a devastating global war, founded on the understanding that peace, dignity, and stability require cooperation among nations guided by shared principles.
The Prime Minister said Ethiopia was part of that founding moment and recalled the country’s historical experience with the international system, including the failure of the League of Nations when collective security mechanisms proved ineffective.
Despite that experience, he stated that Ethiopia remained committed to international engagement, emphasizing that institutions retain legitimacy only when they are capable of acting effectively during times of crisis.
Prime Minister Abiy further observed that trust among nations is increasingly under strain as conflicts grow more complex and gaps persist between international commitments and implementation.
He stressed that the United Nations must continue evolving to become more representative, equitable, and reflective of current global realities, adding that Africa should have a stronger voice in decisions affecting the continent’s future.
According to the Prime Minister, broader representation within the international system would strengthen both its effectiveness and credibility.
He added that Africa stands ready to contribute more actively toward building a stronger and more credible global order.
The Prime Minister also called for greater international urgency in addressing interconnected global challenges, including peace and security, development, climate change, and technological transformation, stressing the need for deeper coordination, stronger partnerships, and meaningful cooperation.
Prime Minister Abiy expressed appreciation to UN Secretary-General António Guterres for his years of service and engagement with Africa, while also acknowledging Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed for her support and contribution to advancing the organization’s vision.
During the event, Ethiopia unveiled a commemorative stamp collection marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations under the theme “To Live Together in Peace.”
Prime Minister Abiy reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to multilateralism, stating that the country believes in a fair, inclusive, and result-oriented international system and will continue contributing to shaping the future of global cooperation.
