Strong Finish for Ethiopia as Team Secures 15 Medals at Continental Athletics Championships

Addis Ababa, May 17, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia concluded its participation at the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships – Accra 2026 with a total of 15 medals, marking a strong finish and reaffirming its continued presence in continental athletics.

The championship, held in Accra, Ghana from May 12 to 17 at the University of Ghana Stadium, brought together elite athletes from across the continent for one of Africa’s premier athletics competitions.

Ethiopia secured five gold medals through Ajaiba Alyu, Mesgana Hailu, Gemechu Godana, Mesganaw Waquma, and Woubalem Shigute, who delivered outstanding performances in their respective events.

The country also claimed silver medals in the women’s 4×400 meters relay through Otage Obang, Mubin Haji, and Hagos Eyob in individual and team events.

Bronze medals were earned by Almaz, Samuel Frew, Ziyin Ayelign, Betselot Alemayehu, Asefu Abraha, and Abdulselam Abdulwahib.

Ethiopia was represented by a 63-member delegation comprising 32 women and 31 men.

The result once again highlights Ethiopia’s consistency and competitiveness in African athletics championships, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation said, following the outcome.
