AU Election Observation Mission Head Uhuru Kenyatta Praises Ethiopian Voters’ Commitment to Democratic Process

Addis Ababa, June 3, 2026 (FMC) — Former Kenyan President and Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) Uhuru Kenyatta has commended Ethiopian voters for their strong commitment to democratic participation during the country’s 7th General Election.

Presenting the mission’s preliminary statement in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, Kenyatta highlighted the active engagement of citizens as one of the defining features observed across polling stations visited by AU observers.

The mission noted that voters turned out in significant numbers and demonstrated a strong sense of civic responsibility, with sustained participation recorded throughout election day in areas covered by the observation teams.

According to the African Union Election Observation Mission, the electoral process was generally calm and orderly, allowing citizens to exercise their democratic rights in a peaceful environment.

Kenyatta observed that one of the most striking features of the election was the patience and determination shown by voters, many of whom remained in long queues to ensure their participation in the process.

The mission further highlighted the contribution of election officials, security personnel, domestic observers, party agents, and media representatives in supporting transparency and ensuring the smooth conduct of the vote.

It also noted facilitation measures at polling stations aimed at supporting inclusive participation, including priority arrangements for elderly citizens, persons with disabilities, and other voters requiring assistance.

The AU mission emphasized that voter education support provided at polling stations helped citizens understand electoral procedures, contributing to orderly participation across polling centers.

Essential electoral materials were reported to be available in all polling stations visited, while procedures were largely followed in line with established electoral guidelines.

Kenyatta also acknowledged the broader civic spirit demonstrated by citizens, describing the election as a reflection of strong public engagement in Ethiopia’s democratic process.

In his remarks, he encouraged continued dialogue, inclusion, and cooperation as Ethiopia advances its democratic journey.

The African Union Election Observation Mission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen democratic governance, electoral institutions, and inclusive participation.
