Kenyatta Hails Ethiopia’s Historical Role in Africa’s Independence and Continental Identity

Addis Ababa, June 2026 (FMC) — Former Kenyan President and Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission, Uhuru Kenyatta, has paid tribute to Ethiopia’s historical role in Africa’s independence struggle and its enduring place in the continent’s political identity, describing the country as a symbol of African sovereignty and self-determination.

Kenyatta made the remarks in a personal reflection delivered at the conclusion of the African Union Election Observation Mission’s preliminary statement on Ethiopia’s 7th General Election.

In his reflection, he emphasized that Ethiopia holds a unique place in Africa’s modern history, recalling its resistance against colonial domination and its long-standing role as a defender of African independence and self-rule.

He noted that Ethiopia’s historical experience has positioned it as a continental reference point for sovereignty and unity, describing it as a nation that has long embodied Africa’s aspirations for self-determination.

Kenyatta further described Ethiopia as having played a symbolic role in Africa’s broader political evolution, referring to its standing as a historical center of African diplomacy and cooperation.

He stressed that Ethiopia’s legacy places responsibility on the country to continue strengthening unity among its people, calling for deeper political and social dialogue that brings all segments of society into national life.

According to him, inclusive engagement remains essential to sustaining national cohesion and ensuring that all communities feel part of the country’s ongoing political and social processes.

The AU mission head also expressed confidence in Ethiopia’s future, noting that the country has the potential to further contribute to a continent shaped by dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful resolution of differences.

He highlighted the importance of African solutions to African challenges, underscoring the role of dialogue and compromise in advancing peace, stability, and development across the continent.

Kenyatta concluded his remarks by expressing appreciation to members of the election observation mission, describing their work in Ethiopia as an inspiring experience, and extending goodwill wishes to Ethiopia and the African continent.
