Malaysia’s PM Anwar Ibrahim congratulates Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party on election victory
Addis Ababa, June 22, 2026 (FMC) – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party following their victory in the country’s general election, joining a growing list of international leaders acknowledging the outcome.
In a message shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Anwar extended his “warm congratulations” to the Ethiopian leadership on securing victory in the recently concluded polls.
Recalling his official visit to Addis Ababa last year—the first by a Malaysian prime minister—Anwar said he was struck by “the warmth of the welcome and the substance” of his discussions with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. He noted that both leaders share a similar outlook on global affairs and emphasized that countries of the Global South stand to benefit from engagement “as equals.”
The Malaysian leader further underlined Ethiopia’s importance in Malaysia’s engagement with Africa, noting that several initiatives launched during earlier high-level exchanges should be advanced further through continued cooperation.
“Ethiopia matters greatly to how Malaysia engages with Africa. There is much that we set in motion last year, and I look forward to carrying it forward together,” he stated.
Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party secured a parliamentary majority in the 2026 general election, reinforcing its governing mandate amid ongoing political and economic reforms.
The election has drawn congratulatory messages from several international partners, reflecting Ethiopia’s expanding diplomatic engagement across regions.
