Indian PM Narendra Modi Congratulates Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Prosperity Party on Electoral Victory

Addis Ababa, June 23, 2026 (FMC) – Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has congratulated Ethiopia’s leadership following what he described as a decisive electoral victory, while reaffirming India’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

In a message addressed to his Ethiopian counterpart, Modi congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Prosperity Party on their electoral success, expressing confidence in continued cooperation between New Delhi and Addis Ababa.

He said India greatly values its historic, multifaceted and long-standing relationship with Ethiopia, describing bilateral ties as rooted in deep people-to-people and institutional connections.

The Indian Prime Minister also recalled his visit to Ethiopia last year, noting it as a reflection of the growing engagement between the two countries at the highest political level.
He added that India looks forward to working closely with Ethiopia to further strengthen their strategic partnership and expand cooperation across areas of mutual interest, including economic and diplomatic relations.

Ethiopia’s 7th General Election was held on June 1, 2026, and the National Election Board of Ethiopia announced the official results on June 21, confirming a Prosperity Party majority victory.

The Prosperity Party won 438 of the 501 seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives. The election process was conducted nationwide and results were formally announced by the National Election Board of Ethiopia.
