Ethiopian Airlines Adds Lyon to Growing European Network, Deepens Ethiopia–France Connectivity
Addis Ababa, July 2, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Airlines has launched a new passenger service to Lyon, France, further expanding its European network and reinforcing the longstanding diplomatic and economic partnership between Ethiopia and France.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew, French Ambassador to Ethiopia Alexis Lamek, and senior executives of the national carrier.
Speaking at the launch, Mesfin said Lyon has become Ethiopian Airlines’ 23rd destination in Europe and its third destination in France, following Paris and Marseille.
He noted that the new route underscores the airline’s continued commitment to expanding its global network while further strengthening bilateral relations between Ethiopia and France.
“The launch of the Lyon route will further strengthen the relationship between our two countries and create greater opportunities for trade, tourism, investment, and cultural exchange,” the CEO said.
Mesfin also revealed that Ethiopian Airlines plans to inaugurate five additional international destinations before the end of 2026 as part of its ongoing global expansion strategy.
“As Africa’s leading airline, we will continue investing to support the continent’s economic integration and strengthen connectivity between Africa and the rest of the world,” he said.
The CEO further invited French companies to participate in the development of the Bishoftu International Airport project, describing the landmark aviation infrastructure initiative as a significant opportunity for investment and long-term cooperation.
French Ambassador to Ethiopia Alexis Lamek welcomed the launch of the new route, saying it reflects the steadily expanding partnership between Ethiopia and France.
“I am pleased to see Ethiopia and France continuing to expand their relationship,” the ambassador said. “The new direct service will further strengthen economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties between our two countries.”
The inaugural flight to Lyon—one of France’s leading economic, industrial, and cultural centers—departed on Thursday, officially commencing regular passenger services between Addis Ababa and the city.
The addition of Lyon further consolidates Ethiopian Airlines’ position as Africa’s largest carrier while advancing its long-term strategy of strengthening Addis Ababa’s role as a major global aviation hub connecting Africa with Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.
The new service is also expected to facilitate greater business engagement, tourism, and investment flows between Ethiopia, France, and the wider European market, while enhancing travel options for passengers and supporting stronger commercial and cultural exchanges, as reported by ENA.
