PM Abiy Meets with Qatar’s Emir During Condolence Visit

Addis Ababa, July 14, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, at Lusail Palace, where he conveyed Ethiopia’s condolences following the passing of Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Abiy expressed his condolences to the Emir, the government, and the people of Qatar over the passing of the former Amir and Father Emir, honoring his legacy and contributions to regional and global affairs.

The meeting took place during Prime Minister Abiy’s visit to Qatar to pay his respects following the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Abiy extended his condolences to the Emir of Qatar, the government, and the people of Qatar, describing the late Father Emir as a visionary leader whose wisdom and statesmanship helped strengthen Qatar’s role in regional and international affairs.

The Prime Minister also highlighted Sheikh Hamad’s commitment to dialogue, mediation, and peaceful solutions to conflicts, as well as his contribution to strengthening Ethiopia-Qatar relations.

He recalled the historical ties between Ethiopia and Qatar, including Sheikh Hamad’s role in advancing bilateral relations during his leadership, and expressed confidence that the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries would continue to grow.

The meeting was attended by Qatar’s Deputy Emir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, Personal Representative of the Emir Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, members of the ruling family, and other senior officials.

Prime Minister Abiy’s visit underscores the longstanding relations between Ethiopia and Qatar and Ethiopia’s solidarity with the Qatari leadership and people during this period of mourning.
