From Land to Sea: Ethiopia’s Special Operations Command Expands Elite Capabilities for Emerging Threats

Addis Ababa, July 23, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Special Operations Command has expanded its operational capabilities from land-based missions to maritime operations, strengthening its readiness to respond to evolving security challenges and safeguard national sovereignty, public safety, and regional stability.

As part of the broader reform efforts undertaken to modernize the Ethiopian National Defense Force, the Special Operations Command has emerged as one of the key formations built around advanced military science, strict discipline, technological capability, and a strong commitment to national service.

The Command represents the elite wing of the Ethiopian Defense Force, established to carry out complex missions requiring exceptional military skills, rapid decision-making capacity, and advanced operational readiness.

Built on rigorous military discipline, advanced physical and psychological preparation, and modern combat techniques, the Command has developed highly trained personnel capable of responding effectively to challenging security situations.

The training process of its members goes beyond conventional combat skills and physical endurance. It incorporates complex operational strategies, leadership development, rapid response mechanisms, and the effective use of modern technologies to address emerging security threats.

Members of the Command undergo intensive training designed to prepare them for operations under difficult geographical conditions, extreme weather environments, and high-pressure situations. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, previously highlighted that Ethiopia has built an elite force capable of addressing security challenges extending from the country’s eastern frontiers to the Red Sea, supporting neighboring peoples, and contributing to regional peace and development.

He described members of the Command as soldiers who have earned the honor of wearing the Red Beret, standing ready to dedicate themselves to Ethiopia’s flag and independence. He also emphasized that the force operates with modern technology and remains committed to national service beyond ethnic and political considerations.

Chief of the Defense Forces Field Marshal Berhanu Jula stated that the Ethiopian military has achieved historic successes by effectively responding to internal and external security challenges in recent years. He noted that the force has also contributed to the development of specialized units, including the Republican Guard.

Today, the Special Operations Command has developed comprehensive capabilities to conduct missions across land, air, and maritime domains, maintaining full readiness to successfully execute its responsibilities under any circumstances.
