Ethiopia’s Digital Ambition Rests on Skilled Human Capital: Innovation Ministry Advisor

Addis Ababa, August 10, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s digital transformation ultimately depends on developing the human capabilities needed to effectively utilize its expanding digital infrastructure and technological advances, Abiyot Bayou, Senior Advisor to the Minister of Innovation and Technology, said.

Abiyot made the remarks during an experience-sharing program on the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative hosted by the Office of the Prime Minister, bringing together initiative alumni, young professionals, technology industry leaders and policymakers to exchange experiences on digital skills development and the advancement of the Digital Ethiopia 2030 agenda.

He emphasized that building advanced digital platforms and achieving full digitalization would mean little without the skills required to utilize them effectively.

He said the objectives of Digital Ethiopia 2030—including empowering people, building inclusive digital ecosystems, expanding accessibility and transforming Ethiopia into a digital hub—ultimately rely on human capability.

Abiyot called on young professionals to actively build their skills, continuously strengthen their capabilities and strive for excellence in their respective sectors to unlock the potential of Ethiopia’s digital transformation.

The experience-sharing program featured discussions among graduates and other stakeholders of the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative on practical digital skills, innovation and opportunities within Ethiopia’s growing digital ecosystem.
