Ethiopia’s Young Tech Trailblazers Turn Coding Skills into Innovation, Opportunity
Addis Ababa, August 10, 2026 (FMC) — Seventeen years ago, when Bethlehem Dessie took her first steps into technology at the age of 10, digital access was a scarce privilege.
Today, she sees an entirely different landscape unfolding before Ethiopia’s young people—one in which technology, learning resources and opportunities are increasingly within reach.
For Bethlehem, now a technology entrepreneur and CEO of Gheero (ጊሮ), that contrast carries a clear message: opportunity has arrived, and the next step is for young people to seize it.
She is among a growing generation of Ethiopian technology professionals who believe the country’s expanding digital opportunities must translate into action—not merely certificates, courses or access to devices.
“Today’s youth have a seamless path to achieving their dreams” because technology has become vastly more accessible, Bethlehem said, urging university students not to wait to make an impact but to begin driving change now and continuously upgrade their skills.
Her message echoes a broader transformation underway in Ethiopia, where digital skills development has increasingly moved from the margins of education and employment policy to the center of the country’s development ambitions.
At the heart of that effort is the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative, a national digital-skills drive designed to equip millions of Ethiopians with coding and other technology-related capabilities and build the human capital needed for a rapidly changing digital economy.
The initiative has grown into more than a mass training program. Its expanding community of learners and graduates is becoming a pool of young people expected not simply to understand technology, but to use it—to build, solve problems, create businesses and develop solutions suited to Ethiopia’s own challenges.
For Azmeraw Taddese, that transition from learning to doing has already become personal.
Azmeraw joined the initiative during his final years at university. What began as an opportunity to learn coding eventually became a practical venture: he built a website connecting coders in Addis Ababa and went on to pursue a career as a full-stack developer.
His journey illustrates the distinction between acquiring a digital skill and putting that skill to work.
Azmeraw urged young people not to stop when they receive certification. The real growth, he said, comes from applying what they have learned and continuing to practice.
That emphasis on application is also central to the message of Mahlet Seyoum, a technology entrepreneur and alumna of the initiative.
Mahlet argues that the ability to create with technology is no longer confined to people who come from highly specialized backgrounds. With educational resources and digital tools becoming increasingly accessible, individuals can identify problems around them, draw on available resources and begin developing solutions.
Programming, in this sense, is not simply about writing code. It is a means of looking at everyday problems differently—and having the tools to do something about them.
Mahlet called on young people to continuously update their skills, pursue targeted courses and actively equip themselves with modern technologies.
Together, the experiences of Bethlehem, Azmeraw and Mahlet point to a defining challenge for Ethiopia’s digital transformation: how to turn unprecedented access to technology into productive human capability.
The question is no longer only whether young Ethiopians can access digital learning. It is whether they can transform that learning into innovation, entrepreneurship, employment and solutions that create value.
That is precisely where the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative assumes a larger significance.
Launched as an ambitious effort to develop mass digital skills, the initiative has sought to create a generation capable of participating in a technology-driven economy. Its rapid expansion has also taken it beyond the original five-million ambition, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed calling for participation to reach 7 million by the end of the current rainy season.
The shift from five million to seven million signals a broader ambition: building digital capability at scale and ensuring that a large pool of young Ethiopians is equipped to participate in the country’s technological transformation.
But numbers alone cannot deliver that transformation.
A million certificates cannot build a digital economy unless the skills behind them are put to work. Millions of learners become an economic force only when learning evolves into practice, practice into innovation, and innovation into products, businesses and solutions.
This is where the initiative increasingly intersects with Digital Ethiopia 2030, the country’s broader digital transformation agenda.
Digital Ethiopia 2030 envisions a country in which digital technologies expand opportunity, improve accessibility, empower people and strengthen an inclusive digital ecosystem. Its ambition reaches beyond individual coding skills to a much wider transformation in how citizens, businesses and institutions interact with technology.
The human element, however, remains decisive.
As Ethiopia expands its digital infrastructure, platforms and technological capabilities, the country needs people who can build them, operate them, improve them and create new applications around them.
That is why the stories emerging from the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative matter beyond the classroom.
Bethlehem’s journey captures how dramatically the landscape of opportunity has changed within a generation.
Azmeraw’s experience demonstrates what can happen when digital learning is carried into practical application.
Mahlet’s message widens the horizon further: technological problem-solving can become accessible to far more people when knowledge and tools are within reach.
Their message is ultimately one of urgency.
