Ethiopian Muslims Mark Mawlid With Faith, Solidarity and Community Support

Addis Ababa, August 25, 2026 (FMC) — Muslims across #Ethiopia have marked the 1,501st Mawlid al-Nabi with religious observances, communal gatherings and acts of solidarity, highlighting values of peace, love, unity and mutual support associated with the occasion.

The celebration has been held in different parts of the country, drawing worshippers, religious leaders, community members and guests to mosques and other religious sites for prayers, religious teachings and communal activities.

In Harar, one of Ethiopia’s historic Islamic centers, the occasion has been observed through a range of religious ceremonies, with prayers also focusing on peace, national unity and love for the country.

Communities in parts of Harari, Oromia, Amhara, the South Ethiopia and other areas have likewise marked Mawlid through gatherings centered on togetherness, mutual support and assistance to people in need.

In Jimma, the celebration has featured communal meals and support for vulnerable members of the community. Religious leaders said the occasion should be an opportunity to reach out to those facing hardship, including by providing food and other forms of assistance. More than 5,000 people in need were reportedly provided with meals as part of the celebrations.

In Dilla, a communal meal was organized for more than 2,000 people, with religious leaders emphasizing that following the Prophet Muhammad’s example should be reflected through compassion, solidarity and practical support for others.

Similar activities have taken place in Gondar and parts of West Gondar, where religious leaders and worshippers underscored the importance of celebrating Mawlid in ways that reinforce peace, love, brotherhood and social cohesion. Celebrations have included prayers, religious teachings, devotional programs and communal meals.

In South Wollo, the occasion has been particularly marked at the historic Geta and Jema Negus mosques, attracting participants from different areas. Local officials said the celebrations have brought communities and visitors together in a spirit of love and solidarity, while encouraging support for people facing hardship.

Across the celebrations, religious leaders and worshippers have emphasized that Mawlid should go beyond religious observance by promoting compassion, sharing and mutual assistance. They have called for the values associated with Prophet Muhammad’s teachings to be reflected in everyday community life, strengthening social bonds and peaceful coexistence.

The 1,501st Mawlid al-Nabi is being observed by Muslims in Ethiopia through prayers, religious ceremonies, devotional gatherings and community-based acts of support, reflecting the occasion’s religious significance as well as its emphasis on solidarity and shared responsibility.
