IGAD, AU Step Up Joint Efforts to Advance Peace and Stability in Sudan
Addis Ababa, August 26, 2026 (FMC) — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union (AU) have agreed to strengthen joint efforts to advance peace and stability in Sudan, with the interests and aspirations of the Sudanese people at the centre of their engagement.
IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu held discussions with African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, focusing on regional peace and security.
Workneh briefed the AU Commission Chairperson on his recent mission to Sudan, providing an update on his engagements and the situation in the country.
The two sides agreed to deepen IGAD–AU cooperation in support of efforts to advance peace and stability in Sudan, emphasizing the need to place the Sudanese people’s interests and aspirations at the heart of regional peace efforts.
