UN General Assembly Proclaims April 22 International Day of Greening the Planet

Addis Ababa, September 2, 2026 (FMC) — The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed April 22 as the International Day of Greening the Planet, adopting a Kazakhstan-initiated resolution aimed at advancing global efforts to protect the environment, restore ecosystems and expand green spaces, TV BRICS reported, citing Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The resolution was adopted on August 31 after the initiative was proposed by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025.

The resolution was co-sponsored by 32 countries from different regions, reflecting broad international support for the initiative.

According to Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry, the new international observance is intended to raise global awareness of the importance of greening and restoring natural ecosystems while encouraging governments, UN bodies, international and regional organizations, civil society and other stakeholders to undertake environmental initiatives.

The initiative seeks to strengthen international efforts to protect the environment, restore degraded ecosystems, expand green areas and promote environmental awareness and an ecological culture.

The April 22 observance also coincides with Earth Day, providing an established global platform for mobilizing environmental awareness and action.

The initiative is aligned with Kazakhstan’s nationwide “Taza Qazaqstan” (“Clean Kazakhstan”) environmental campaign, which promotes responsible attitudes toward the environment, improvement of public spaces and greater environmental awareness.

TV BRICS, citing Kazinform, a TV BRICS partner, and Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Ecology, reported that more than one million trees have been planted under the campaign since the beginning of 2026.

The adoption of the resolution places planetary greening and ecosystem restoration on the international calendar, providing an additional platform for countries and other stakeholders to advance practical action toward environmental protection and sustainable development.
