Ethiopia’s Agricultural Exports Generate More Than $4.55 Billion in 2025/26 Fiscal Year

Addis Ababa, September 2, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia generated more than $4.55 billion in export earnings from agricultural products during the 2025/26 fiscal year, underscoring the sector’s growing role in foreign-exchange generation and the country’s efforts to expand agricultural production and access international markets, the Ministry of Agriculture said.

The ministry said the performance was supported by expanded cultivation, increased agricultural productivity and growing output across crop and livestock subsectors. A total of 33 million hectares was covered by various crops, producing 1.85 billion quintals during the fiscal year.

Irrigated wheat production in particular continued to strengthen Ethiopia’s food-security position while creating greater potential for the domestic economy and agricultural exports.

Under the Bounty of the Basket (YeLemat Trufat) program, Ethiopia produced more than 15.83 billion liters of milk and more than 427 million tons of honey, while 11.7 billion eggs were supplied to the market.

Agricultural exports generated more than $4.55 billion during the fiscal year, with coffee accounting for the largest share and remaining a major source of foreign exchange for the sector.

The ministry also reported progress in environmental conservation and watershed management, including the planting of 7.7 billion seedlings under the Green Legacy Initiative and soil and water conservation activities covering millions of hectares.

It said Ethiopia also secured adequate fertilizer supplies through early planning and procurement despite supply disruptions and shortages faced by several countries amid conflict in the Middle East.

Looking ahead, the ministry said agricultural mechanization, digital agriculture and climate-resilience measures will be key priorities in the 2026/27 fiscal year, alongside efforts to further modernize agricultural production and management systems.
