Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Arrives in Kenya for Lamu Refinery Groundbreaking

Addis Ababa, September 30, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Kenya this morning ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lamu Refinery, marking another high-level engagement around strategic energy infrastructure in the Horn and East Africa.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister’s visit comes less than a week after he joined Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh and African industrialist Aliko Dangote in announcing a major refined petroleum products pipeline linking Damerjog in Djibouti with Dewele in Ethiopia.

The Djibouti project, to be developed through a partnership between Ethiopian Investment Holdings and Dangote Group, includes storage terminals at both ends and is designed to reduce logistics costs and delays while strengthening energy security and the efficiency of the Ethiopia-Djibouti corridor.

Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Abiy’s presence in Kenya for the Lamu Refinery groundbreaking highlights Ethiopia’s continuing engagement in regional infrastructure and energy initiatives that connect national development priorities with wider economic corridors across East Africa.

The Lamu ceremony is expected to mark the launch of another major energy project with implications for regional connectivity and economic cooperation.
