Responsibility Entrusted to Ethiopia’s Newly Sworn-In Lawmakers Is Immense — President Taye
Addis Ababa, October 6, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian President Taye Atske-Selassie said the country’s newly sworn-in lawmakers have been entrusted with an immense national and public responsibility.
The joint regular session of the first year of the seventh parliamentary term of the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the House of Federation is underway in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), President Taye Atske-Selassie and elected members of the two Houses.
President Taye, who officially opened the session, congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) on his reappointment as Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
He also congratulated the elected members of the two Houses on receiving the mandate of the people in the seventh national election and becoming members of Parliament.
President Taye said Parliament is a living symbol and testimony that the foundation and source of state power lie in the consent and voice of the people.
He stressed that the responsibility entrusted to the lawmakers is particularly significant, as the work they undertake and the laws they enact will shape Ethiopia’s path toward the future on the basis of the consent, mandate and legitimacy of the people.
He said the people who elected the lawmakers have entrusted them with a great responsibility alongside their confidence in them, expressing his belief that they will discharge this responsibility with wisdom, competence, prudence, diligence and commitment.
President Taye further emphasized that the lawmakers’ overall preparedness should not only meet the expectations placed upon them but also contribute to taking the country toward a higher stage.
