Jamaican PM Andrew Holness Congratulates Ethiopia’s PM Abiy Ahmed on Re-Election, Commends Solidarity in Hurricane Melissa Recovery
Addis Ababa, October 7, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister of Jamaica has extended heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on his re-election, commending Ethiopia’s solidarity with Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa and expressing his country’s readiness to further deepen the longstanding Jamaica–Ethiopia relationship.
The Jamaican leader conveyed his congratulations as Ethiopia begins a new five-year political chapter following the opening of its 7th parliamentary term, the re-election of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed by the newly constituted House of Peoples’ Representatives and the formation of the new federal government.
In his message, the Jamaican Prime Minister emphasized the longstanding ties between Jamaica and Ethiopia, saying Jamaica values the friendship connecting the two countries.
He specifically highlighted Ethiopia’s support for Jamaica’s recovery following Hurricane Melissa, citing the deployment of an Ethiopian technical team to assess areas affected by the hurricane and Ethiopia’s commitment to support the rebuilding of a school in Jamaica.
Looking ahead, the Jamaican Prime Minister said he looks forward to strengthening the relationship between Jamaica and Ethiopia and deepening cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of both countries.
He wished Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed every success in his second term and continued prosperity for the people of Ethiopia.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was re-elected on October 5 as Ethiopia’s 7th parliamentary term opened, subsequently taking the constitutional oath of office for another five-year term as the country’s Prime Minister.
