Ethiopia’s Parliament Opens Regular Session as PM Abiy Presents Cabinet Nominees
Addis Ababa, October 8, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives has begun its first regular session of the 7th parliamentary term in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, with the Prime Minister presenting nominees for members of his Cabinet to the House.
The regular parliamentary session is underway as the newly constituted House takes up the formation of the Cabinet of the new Medemer Government, following the opening of the 7th parliamentary term and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s re-election for another five-year term.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is presenting the nominees for his Cabinet during the ongoing session, with the House expected to consider the proposed appointments in accordance with its parliamentary responsibilities.
The session comes three days after the 7th parliamentary term formally opened on October 5, when newly elected members of the House took their oaths and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was re-elected and subsequently sworn in for another five-year term.
The ongoing proceedings mark the latest institutional step in establishing the new federal government following Ethiopia’s June 1, 2026 general election.
