Ethiopia’s Parliament Approves New Ministerial Cabinet as 7th Term Government Takes Shape
Addis Ababa, October 8, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives has unanimously approved the 23 ministerial cabinet nominees presented by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, completing the parliamentary approval process for the ministerial Cabinet of the new Medemer Government.
The approval was granted today during the House’s first regular session of the 7th parliamentary term, formally clearing the nominees to assume their respective ministerial responsibilities.
The newly approved Cabinet brings together a mix of experienced officeholders and new appointments across the federal executive, with representation spanning key areas of Ethiopia’s political, economic, social and national development agenda.
Women account for nine of the 22 ministers, or about 41 percent of the newly approved Cabinet, with women taking charge of portfolios including Finance, Justice, Trade and Regional Integration, Health, Revenues, Culture and Tourism, Mining, Women and Social Affairs, and Innovation and Technology.
The new ministerial lineup also includes figures associated with political parties that competed in the June 1, 2026 general election, adding a broader political dimension to the federal executive.
Among them are Education Minister Birhanu Nega, a prominent figure associated with the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (EZEMA), and Peace Minister Musa Adem, associated with the Afar People’s Party (APP).
The Cabinet further marks a first in Ethiopia’s federal executive, with a minister from Harari Region taking a ministerial position in the federal government.
The approval comes as Ethiopia begins a new five-year governmental chapter following the opening of the 7th parliamentary term on October 5 and the re-election and swearing-in of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for another five-year mandate.
With Parliament’s approval, the new ministerial Cabinet now constitutes the core ministerial leadership of the federal government for the new parliamentary and governmental term.
