July Marked by Dynamic Leadership and Global Engagement from Ethiopia – PM Office
Addis Ababa, August 2, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia displayed decisive national leadership and robust global engagement throughout July 2025, as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed led a wide range of initiatives that spanned domestic reform, regional diplomacy, and strategic multilateral cooperation.
At home, the Prime Minister presented a comprehensive performance report to members of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR), outlining the implementation status of Ethiopia’s 2024/25 national development plan, the Office of the Prime Minister said in a comprehensive recap of last month’s engagements and key outcomes.
He addressed the country’s economic and security trajectories, highlighting both achievements and enduring challenges.
On the economy, Prime Minister Abiy identified key structural hurdles—unemployment, inflation, trade imbalances, low productivity, and a difficult business environment—as barriers to Ethiopia’s competitiveness. However, he noted measurable progress in agriculture, industry, mining, services, finance, and foreign trade as outcomes of the government’s macroeconomic reform agenda.
On security, he called attention to the dangers of politically motivated narratives and ignorance-fueled ideologies that continue to threaten national cohesion.
Regionally, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Ethiopia’s longstanding commitment to peaceful coexistence and cooperation with its neighbors, pointing out that the country has not engaged in conflict with any of them over the past seven years.
On the international front, Prime Minister Abiy participated in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where he engaged with global leaders to advance Ethiopia’s economic and diplomatic agenda.
Ahead of the summit, he held bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to deepen trade and investment cooperation. In a separate meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang—marking the 55th anniversary of Ethio-China relations—the leaders reaffirmed mutual commitments in areas such as industry, ICT, mining, logistics, clean energy, and artificial intelligence.
At the BRICS opening session, Prime Minister Abiy called for urgent reform of global financial institutions and decision-making structures, advocating for a more just and multipolar international system.
He emphasized the importance of BRICS in promoting inclusive global development, drawing on Ethiopia’s membership since 2023 as a case study in diversified partnerships.
Domestically, the government also convened the Council of Ministers to review the 2018 E.C. national development plan, aiming to sustain reform momentum and strengthen implementation mechanisms across sectors.
Ethiopia also hosted the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS+4) in Addis Ababa in July. Prime Minister Abiy held bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, President William Ruto of Kenya, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia, and President Azali Assoumani of Comoros, addressing regional peace, food security, and development cooperation. He also met with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and other senior UN officials to discuss Africa-wide food systems transformation.
Delivering the keynote address at the summit, Prime Minister Abiy urged for predictable and concessional financing to accelerate investment in agriculture, rural infrastructure, and nutrition, as mentioned by the PM Office.
Citing Ethiopia’s own efforts to boost local production and reduce import dependency, he positioned the country as a model of climate-smart and community-based agricultural reform.
To conclude the summit, Prime Minister Abiy hosted a formal dinner at the National Palace in honour of international delegates—closing a month marked by high-level engagement, development-focused diplomacy, and strategic statecraft.
From parliament to global summits, July 2025 highlighted Ethiopia’s multidimensional approach to national development and international cooperation—anchored in policy reform, peace diplomacy, and visionary leadership.
